The person behind soap making is Jane Hughes, I like and enjoy discovering new things and just doing crafts with my own hands. I always wanted to be able to make body care products and to know how to make solid bar soaps. Hence, a few years ago, I decided to pay for a few lessons to be able to learn about shampoo making.
The teacher presented with her ingredients and never explained where we could get them from neither did, she articulate what they were. She was interested in selling her ingredients to us. We were a class of five women and we learnt nothing in that first class. After that lesson, we went for coffee (tea) as strangers and vented on the wasted money. We felt robbed in clear daylight. I cancelled my other classes and decided to forget about learning about making body care products and life continued.
The urge to venture into this industry never went away but I was not going to embark on wasting more money. However, my dream was still burning strong inside me. I, therefore, took time to research and read more widely on soap making and the ingredients required. It takes a lot of time to undertake research and also, I wanted to make natural soap and lotions without putting chemicals.
And like everything, I put down a budget to venture into this new world of uncertainty. I bought the small moulds just in case I failed then I did not have much to lose but I do believe in myself and failing is not part of my vocabulary. I started making soap with only one oil and the excitement of seeing it turn into soap was overwhelming. The satisfaction I got from that first bunch of soap is more to be cherished.
After that, it was a trial and error of different oils until I got my recipe which I am comfortable with. I am still playing with a bit of different oils here and there. Soap making is fun and it can also be frustrating. Sometimes you imagine how the soap will turn out to be just to turn out terrible and you throw it away. It is a learning journey which I am enjoying.
Lotions are a bit easier to make than soaps even though complete hygiene to almost sterility is required to ensure that the lotion keeps up to the required standard. Nothing is too hard if one is prepared to give it ago.
