Natural ingredients are always better for our body and skin and therefore I embrace them. Activated charcoal has been used for ages yonks and it has many benefits for our body. Activated charcoal is often used to treat poisoning and overdose.
Activated charcoal is an odourless black powder found in many shops and chemists. It is also found in hospitals where it treats overdose and consumed poison. It is also believed to treat other ailments such as gas and flatulence, lower cholesterol levels, water filtering, teeth whitening, anti-detoxification, and has anti-aging elements. You find some people use the tablet form of this activated charcoal for one thing or another.
Activated charcoal on poison or toxins in the body
Activated charcoal is administered in the hospital for overdose and poisons consumed orally. A lot of research has been done and showed that activated charcoal is the first line of treatment when you present to the hospital with orally consumed poison or toxin. It is very effective when administered in the first hour of a life-threatening overdose and or poison before the poison is absorbed by your body. Once administered the charcoal binds or come into contact with the drug or poison in the stomach and absorbs it. This is because activated charcoal is not metabolised by the body.
Water filtration
One of the benefits of using activated charcoal is the ability to filter the drinking water. Charcoal is also considered as carbon which is treated with oxygen that forms tiny pores between the carbon atoms. Hence the name activated charcoal after this formulation.
In developing countries where they do not have clean water to consume, they treat their water using charcoal and then boil that water to make it pure for their consumption. This is because impurities in the water get attracted to the charcoal and bond on the surface making the water clean for consumption.
Gas and flatulence
Activated charcoal is also used by people who suffer from bad gas and flatulence. Some people cannot socialise since their guts produce a lot of gas which is uncomfortable to be among other people. In this case, taking activated charcoal in the form of a capsule or a spoon in the water sorts this problem out and provides a better life to those who suffer from gas.
Sometimes is also used to remove bad smells from the fridge, one can use either activated charcoal or some pieces of charcoal and place them in the fridge for one or two days and the smell disappears.
Activated charcoal in soap
Since activated charcoal is believed to have a lot of benefits, I use it in my soap. I formulate my soap recipe and add activated charcoal in the tracing phase. Then I wait for my soap to cure for four weeks before I sell it to my customers.
The soap is good in removing the toxins from our skin and also leaves your skin feeling fresh and smooth. It depends on how dark you would prefer your soap to look. If you would like it to be black then you will need more activated charcoal in your soap. Sometimes people just need a small colour for their soap and a little bit of activated charcoal produces a grey colour in the soap.
I also use activated charcoal to swirl my soap since I use natural ingredients in my products. Normally activated charcoal does not disrupt the fragrance oil in the soap and therefore you end up having your own desired product.
